Reading Intervention Services
Reading is a complex skill that incorporates a child's vocabulary knowledge, comprehension, sound system knowledge, memory, visual system, and writing skills.
Reading intervention begins with a comprehensive language and literacy assessment which helps to break down the areas where your child may be having difficulties. Sometimes an occupational therapist may complete an additional assessment if your child is having challenges with writing or visual system (e.g., reading left to right).
We use a systematic structured literacy approach to intervention, which typically involves weekly intervention (could be 1:1 or in a group). Typically we recommend a minimum commitment of 6 months for your child to see significant progress in their literacy skills.
The ability to read and write is life changing! When reading is a challenge, everything feels like a challenge (e.g., we need to be able to read to complete math problems, follow longer instructions, write an answer, or even communicate with friends online). We know that literacy intervention has the ability to make students more confident learners.
